http://aadmitriew.blogspot.com/History of Pavlovsk a magnificent palace and park ensemble began Dec. 12, 1777, when Catherine II gave a small plot of land six kilometers from the village to his son, Tsar Paul and his wife, Maria Feodorovna on the occasion of the birth of their first child - the future Emperor Alexander I. The new estate was called "village Pavlovsk. But soon the rapidly transforming the estate could hardly be called a village.
In 1779, the Pavlovsk were erected two small wooden Palace - Paullyust ("Pavlov's Joy") and Mariental ("Valley of Mary"). In 1780, construction has become an even greater extent, as to create a palace and park ensemble was invited by Charles Cameron, a favorite architect of Catherine, a great connoisseur of antiquity and the follower of the famous Italian architect Antonio Palladio. In 1782 was laid the first stone of a new Great Palace, which was built on the site of the former Paullyusta. Soon was demolished and the second wooden palace, and in its place appeared amusing Fortress "Mariental" (later "Beep"), designed by the architect V. Brenna.
In 1788 Paul I, who preferred to Gatchina, Pavlovsk, presented the "village Pavlovskoe" his wife, Maria Feodorovna. A November 12, 1796, a week after its accession to the throne, the new emperor issued a decree to rename the village to the city of Pavlovsk.
After the tragic death of the Emperor Pavlovsk was entirely in the care of Maria Feodorovna, very fond this residence and made many to Pavlovsk park and palace became a notable event in the cultural life of Russia.
After the revolution, in 1918, Pavlovsk Palace and Park was declared a museum. In the same year the town changed its name - it was named in honor of the deceased Sluck revolutionary Vera Slutskaya. In January 1944, after liberation from the Germans, the city returned to its original name.
During the Second World War, Pavlovsk park and palace suffered much less than other country residences of Russian emperors. But this ensemble still suffered heavy damage: the park was destroyed, many valuable museum exhibits were removed, and the palace was badly damaged by fire.
Through the efforts of talented restorers palace and park ensemble of Pavlovsk was revived. Currently, the Pavlovsk Palace operates a permanent exhibition, which presented a magnificent collection of Russian portrait, as well as scenic views of Pavlovsk.
